AWESOME MEETING!!! Xi Jinping & Trump heralds NEW POSITIONING between USA & China
The meeting went better than anyone expected. Xi Jinping and Donald Trump walked out of Beijing with smiles, handshakes, and language that signals a genuine strategic recalibration from China. This is not just diplomatic theater. Something has shifted.
At the state banquet, Xi said something remarkable:
“Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand. We can help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world.”
That is not the China we’ve heard for the past decade. That is a country that has run out of moves and decided to play a different game.
China Acknowledges the Thucydides Trap
Xi explicitly raised the Thucydides trap—the theory that rising powers and established powers inevitably clash. He asked whether China and the US can “overcome the trap and create a new paradigm in major country relations.”
This is significant. No Chinese leader casually introduces new diplomatic formulations. They don’t talk about the trap openly because it means admitting you’re in an aggressive competition that could lead to war. Xi naming it publicly signals that Beijing is trying to define the vocabulary of the next phase before anyone else does.
The framework they announced: constructive strategic stability. Positive stability with cooperation. Healthy stability with competition within limits. Constant stability with manageable differences. Lasting stability with expected peace.
It sounds like propaganda boilerplate—and Global Times certainly dressed it up that way—but the substance is real. China is pivoting from wolf diplomacy to managed coexistence. The question is whether they follow through.
Iran Is the Biggest Loser
If there’s one country that got absolutely crushed by this summit, it’s Iran.
According to the White House statement, Xi agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open, expressed opposition to militarizing the strait or charging tolls for its use, expressed interest in buying more American oil to reduce China’s dependency on the strait, and agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
China just abandoned its pawn. Iran was cheap oil, a Belt and Road node, and a thorn in America’s side. Now Beijing is signaling it won’t stand in the way of whatever Trump does next in the Persian Gulf.
Everybody else in the world more or less wins from this summit. Russia wins because US-China stability means less global chaos. ASEAN wins. Europe wins. But Iran? Iran got sold out.
The Rumored Deals
The official statements are vague—lots of “cooperation” and “market access” language. But rumors circulating on Chinese social media paint a more detailed picture. If accurate:
Tariffs:
- US permanently removes the 10% fentanyl-related tariff on Chinese goods
- The 24% punitive tariff suspension extended another 18 months
- China reciprocates by removing 10-15% tariffs on US agricultural products
- Only strategic goods retain a 10% rate; everything else returns to normal
Institutional framework:
- Permanent US-China Economic and Trade Committee established
- Investment Review Committee created
- Future disputes handled through negotiation, not Section 301 investigations
Chips and rare earths:
- US suspends 50% chip export penalties for 18 months
- China suspends rare earth export controls for 18 months
- High-end chips and lithography remain under strict controls (unchanged)
People-to-people:
- Five-year multiple-entry business and tourist visas restored
- Direct US-China flights expanded
- Green channels for students and academics reopened
- Restrictions on science and engineering students eased
Military:
- Crisis communication hotlines restored
- Joint anti-drug enforcement restarted
The 3 year timeline is deliberate. It covers the rest of Trump’s term. China is betting that cooperation with this administration is the only viable path, and they’ll reassess when the next president takes office.
Why China Blinked

China walked into this summit checkmated. Japan ended pacifism and committed to defending Taiwan. Venezuela flipped overnight. Cuba is collapsing. Iran is under total blockade. The trade war left China completely isolated—the EU surrendered, Southeast Asia offered nothing. Foreign direct investment into China has cratered while the US hits historic highs.
And then there’s the Iran war itself. From China’s military perspective, watching 40-50 days of US air operations over Iran with only one F-15 lost must have been sobering. Every assumption about American military capability probably went in the trash. You don’t gamble on a war when you don’t know what the enemy can actually do.
Wolf diplomacy failed. Five years of pushing back against Trump produced nothing except a worse strategic position. Xi met his match.
Global Times Tells the Story
The real signal is in the propaganda. Global Times—China’s Sputnik—ran an extraordinarily positive article. No attacks on the US. No victimhood narrative. Just stability, cooperation, mutual benefit.
When Chinese state media sounds like a press release from a satisfied negotiating partner, you know the internal directive has changed. Beijing wants this framed as partnership, not confrontation.
The analysts all reached the same conclusion: China isn’t ending strategic competition, but it’s trying to define boundaries. Stability is not concession—it’s a way to keep rivalry controlled and prevent spiraling into crisis.
What Comes Next
Talk is cheap. China signed deals during Trump’s first term and never followed through because Biden didn’t enforce them. Execution is everything.
But the foundation laid here is genuinely positive. If China follows through—opens markets, buys American goods, cooperates on fentanyl, stays out of Iran—this could be the most significant reset in US-China relations in decades.
The three-year framework means at minimum we get stability through the end of Trump’s term. For those of us in the Asia-Pacific, that matters. Singapore is one of the first places that gets nuked if this goes wrong. No World War III for at least three years is a win.
Xi closed with the hope that both countries can “build a bright future together for the bilateral relationship, in the interest of the well-being of two peoples and the future of humanity.”
