The AI Space Race: Why SpaceX is Bailing Out Anthropic
Absolutely insane news in the AI world today. xAI—or more accurately, SpaceX, since they’ve effectively merged operations—is going to provide Anthropic with access to Colossus 1, the world’s largest supercomputer cluster.

This is mind-melting. xAI is a direct competitor to Anthropic. Grok competes directly with Claude. You would think Elon Musk would hoard this enormous compute advantage for himself. Instead, he’s giving it to a rival, stating that as long as an AI company is working toward the “good of humanity,” he will support them.
But there is a lot more going on here beneath the surface. This isn’t just about altruism. This is about the lawsuit against OpenAI, the compute crunch, and a heating-up AI Cold War with China.
Anthropic’s Compute Crisis
This deal is an absolute godsend for Anthropic. Over the past few months, using Claude has felt like a scam. I subscribed to their most expensive Pro Max plan. The first week was amazing—it felt like the future. By week four, it was unusable.
The model turned stupid. The session limits were suffocating. Every time you worked with the AI, you had this high level of stress and anxiety wondering if you were going to run out of tokens. Anthropic was clearly throttling their models and making caching changes because they were running out of compute. Opus 4.6, in particular, thinks too much and eats tokens too fast.

The core problem for Anthropic is that they don’t own their own supercomputer farms. Even if they had the money to build one today, they couldn’t. All the industrial-scale AI chips from Nvidia are booked out for the next 3 to 5 years.
xAI is different. Elon Musk is pulling a “Tesla” again—building everything in-house, right down to the microchips. By tapping into SpaceX’s infrastructure, Anthropic gets an immediate lifeline. Almost instantly after this deal, Anthropic doubled the 5-hour rate limits for Pro Max and Team plans and removed peak-hour reductions.

The War on OpenAI
Why is Elon Musk doing this? Because he is currently suing OpenAI.
Musk was the original funder of OpenAI when it was supposed to be a non-profit. Now, they’ve turned for-profit, partnered exclusively with Microsoft, and dominate the market. By bailing out Anthropic—whose founders actually defected from OpenAI—Musk is driving a nail deeper into OpenAI’s dominance. He is actively propping up their strongest competitor.
OpenAI isn’t standing still, though. Their recent developments are incredibly strong. Codex is getting fantastic, especially with its ability to use schedulers and crons to act as a consistent, autonomous agent. And their new image generation tool is sweeping through Japan right now—the character sheets and infographics it produces are beautiful and fast. Anthropic has the model quality to compete with that, but they needed the compute to survive. Musk just gave it to them.

The Geopolitical Angle: Orbital Compute vs. China
There is a massive national security angle to this. I strongly suspect the Trump administration has spoken to Elon Musk about this setup.
The AI race between the United States and China is heating up fast. Chinese models, like DeepSeek, are getting really good, and they are using a classic Chinese economic playbook: insane price dumping. They have cut their API pricing by 10x. It is so cheap you don’t even feel it when you use it. They are absorbing massive losses to claw market share away from Western models, and it’s working. For a lot of coding tasks, these cheap Chinese models are already “good enough.”
The US government cannot afford to let the West lose this AI competition. And the ultimate ace up the West’s sleeve is SpaceX.

SpaceX has the unique ability to launch payloads into orbit at an insanely cheap cost. They have the technology to build supercomputer clusters in space—orbital AI compute capacity. This is something China simply cannot do right now, and likely won’t be able to do for another 5 to 10 years. Space-borne server farms give Western AI an unfair, untouchable advantage.
But if SpaceX keeps that entirely to themselves for Grok, it doesn’t help the broader Western AI ecosystem. Grok doesn’t have a big enough market share to hold off China alone. The US needs Anthropic, Google, and others to thrive. By opening up orbital compute to competitors like Anthropic, SpaceX becomes the backbone of the Western AI defense strategy.
